"Tentacle, Dutchman, drives French" (Tentacle)

Whoahh! Kvyat got bumped back to Torro Rosso and fellow countryman Verstappen Jr. got an upgrade to the Red Bull team, effective immediately!

I hope the swap has positive effects for his career. At least he’s got a team mate with more experience now, which means the problem Verstappen and Sainz often had, due the team seeing them as equally experienced and thus asking Max to let Carlos pass etc, should be solved.

That's actually pretty shocking. I've certainly never heard of a mid season team change. Verstappen has been good, but that's pretty harsh on Kvyat. The F1 media guys are certainly going to love this! Vettel probably woke up with a smug look on his face after hearing this too.

Kvyat was WAY out of line in Russia. Everything that is happening to him is well deserved.

So Dainil will still be on the grid-just in a slower car?

Mid-season driver are actually quite common, mostly due to budgetary reasons. Team changes less so, but happen as well. The 2009 season is a great example.
Harsh on Kvyat indeed, the guy got a podium in China! I do wonder whether this will set a precedent (i.e. if Verstappen has a new Monaco moment, they’ll change again), or whether Red Bull was already looking for a way to promote Verstappen.

This happened :)
Both impacts were done by Kvyat.

Rumors were he was already assigned the seat for next season and they think he’s got the most raw talent on the grid. With Kvyat playing bulldozer last week this makes perfect sense, hell they may have done it at some point this year even if none of that happened. The motor in the Toro Rosso is going to lose ground all season so there'll be less learning in that car, if Verstapen screws it all up in the RB they can dust it off as being because of a mid-season change all while he gains experience so there's no learning curve at the beginning of next year.

My reaction was holy shit at first and then, Kvyat is not talented enough to be in a RBR seat. I’m glad Max is sticking with RBR for the foreseeable future. I’m amazed that this has already happened silly season doesn’t usually begin until around Spa. I bet Ferrari was sniffing around Verstappen and his pops and his agent.

I’ve read also that they wanted to keep someone else from stealing VER from STR - so they made the move now before anyone could poach him.
There’s another rumor that they wanted to make the swap after China, but Bernie wanted them to wait until after Russia.

Yes, in fact now that you point that out, you’re right, it’s much more indicative than, say, championship points.

It’s certainly not the first time, not even for RBR/Toro Rosso. Seb Vettel replaced Sebastian Bourdais at the junior team mid season 2007. He would end up with a podium in Italy that year. Of course we know what Vettel would go on to do after that so the precedent is actually a good one for RBR.

Well if they don’t like Kvyat’s hot-headedness I don’t know why they’d swap him with an even less experienced hothead. Verstappen cost them points in Aus by crashing into sainz instead of passing him and moving forward. I would love nothing more than to see that happen again. Mostly because I’m kind of sick of Marko. He has a bit of a history of favoritism over realism

“Fellow countryman”
Kvyat is Russian. Verstappen is Belgian/Dutch depending on who you ask.

Your point? I’m Dutch myself. He has both a Dutch and a Belgian passport, so, yes, fellow countryman.

I thought you meant Kvyat and Verstappen were fellow countrymen, you meant you and Verstappen... yeah my bad
